Nis Grünberg on China’s hydrogen ambitions in the global green technology race
China regards hydrogen as a strategic “frontier technology” and aspires to become a global leader in the industry. As MERICS Lead Analyst Nis Grünberg explains, China’s leaders hope to benefit from both the environmental and the economic benefits that the technology promises to deliver. So far, China primarily produces brown and gray hydrogen by using coal or gas. “Currently, only one percent of China’s hydrogen production is carbon free, using renewable energy,” says Grünberg. But as the latest IEA figures show, China is poised to make the largest investments in renewable energy capacity for green hydrogen production in the coming years.
